What a huge success! More than 500 folks attended
throughout the day making the 2009 Labor Day Family Picnic
the biggest and best yet at J F Gregory Park in Richmond
Hill. “It’s really growing into the family event we
envisioned 8 years ago” said Brett A. Hulme, CLC
President. The kids took advantage of the first time
waterslide, watermelon seed spitting contest and candy in
the hay hunt all in addition to the Puppet People show.
There were 16 homemade desserts entered into the contest
making it tasty but very sweet for the judges. Kenny D
and the Pharaohs entertained the crowd with a wide variety
of music. Yolanda Hingel sang the Star Spangled Banner so
strong that the roar of the crowd was silenced by the time
she reached “twilights last gleaming”.
2 gubernatorial candidates, Roy Barnes and David
Poythress worked the crowd for support. Beth Faroki,
candidate for State School Superintendent, introduced
herself and garnered support for her campaign.
Congressman John Barrow came and stayed a couple of hours
talking and shaking hands with all in attendance. State
representative Bob Bryant visited along with Edna Jackson
(whose red velvet cake won 2nd place in the
dessert contest) and Tony Thomas from Savannah City
Council. Of course Chatham County Commission Chariman
Pete Liakakis came by and as usual was cutting a rug to
Kenny D and the Pharaohs. Richmond Hill mayor came by for
the first time and saw the festive crowd. Also a
candidate for Richmond Hill mayor was present.
A great time was had by all. “It’s amazing with the
economy the way it is that over 34 companies, initiatives
and coalition partners co-sponsored or contributed to
“Keep Georgians Working. That’s the most ever. Continued
proof that everyone agrees we need to Keep Georgians
Working”! boasted President Hulme. “We’re looking forward
to the 2010 Picnic to be even better” said President Hulme.
