Georgia citizens rally to keep jobs in the state. Friday, September 25, from 4:30-6:30pm between 140 – 150 construction workers and supporters gathered outside the main gate at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia. Vogtle is the approved Georgia Power nuclear facility to expand 2 new units. The concern is that the general contractor, Shaw Group, is importing construction workers to build both new facilities. With 12% Georgia unemployment, ahead of the national average, Georgians should be given first opportunity to man this job. Especially since Georgians will swallow a rate increase beginning 2010 to pay for this new construction. It appears Georgia Power expects Georgia citizens to pay for the construction of these new units UP FRONT but are EXCLUDED from working on this project. Where’s the justice!

During the 2 hour rally, license plates from Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Utah, Texas and West Virginia were observed driving into and exiting Plant Vogtle at shift change for the preliminary construction work already started.
